About Us

Wealden Horse Rescue was first formed in 2010 by Gordon and Vanessa, to try to help address the ever increasing number of horses and ponies who require help due to neglect or abandonment after they obtained for a nominal sum a herd of six neglected yearlings.  Since 2010 we have helped over thirty equines in need.

In recent years the nature of our work has evolved to catering more specifically for older equines who need a home - generally due to the severe illness or passing of their owner.  In addition, following a string of rehoming 'disasters' coupled with the economic uncertainty that followed COVID, we decided that we would no longer rehome the animals we take in and that they would instead remain with us for life so as we can better ensure that they are cared for appropriately and not subjected to the stress of going to a new home only to be returned a while later.

It is for these reasons we decided to update our Constitution to better reflect our aims and objectives.  In late 2020, we reformed as Wealden Horse & Pony Sanctuary and are now registered with the Charity Commission under number 1192209.

We can only accommodate a very small number of horses - partly due to constraints on resources and partly due to our belief that all horses need our individual care and attention in order to remain happy and healthy. However, we will always help in cases of genuine needneglect and/or abandonment.

We operate predominantly in the East and West Sussex areas although we have taken horses from as far afield as Birmingham and Bristol.

Unfortunately we are unable to open to the public due to planning restrictions but we are more than happy to show individuals or small groups around by prior appointment.
